Request your support and guidance in highlighting the harassment and blackmail of senior citizens in marriage disputes by misuse of Anti-dowry law ( Sec -498A of IPC) ,Domestic Violence Act 2005 and related laws by daughter-in-law.
We as Mothers and Sisters Initiative( MASI) and Save Indian Family Foundation ( SIFF) , a non funded NGO’s,comprising of family members who are victims of these draconian laws have started a letter campaign to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, to highlight the vulnerability of senior citizens and elderly to abuse by the misuse of these laws.
We conducts seminars, press conferences, Dharnas, participates in TV shows and debates on various issues related to Women Empowerment, with a goal, to achieve Family Harmony in Indian society. We have been frequently invited to various Parliamentary Committees to tender oral evidence and have deposed on various occasions, including the recent Irretrievable Breakdown of Marriage Bill and Female Foeticide Bill, amongst others. We also provide free legal advice to victims of dowry laws misuse.
I would like to highlight the harassment being meted out to lakhs of senior citizens at the hands of a greedy and unscrupulous daughter – in –law who in her bid to take revenge on husband and his family members , in the event of a strained marriage, forces them to bow down to her demands by threatening to file gender – biased laws like Sec-498 A of IPC and Domestic Violence Act 2005.
Passed by Indian Parliament in 1983, Indian Penal Code, 498A, is a criminal law (not a civil law) which is defined as follows,
“Whoever, being the husband or the relative of the husband of a woman, subjects such woman to cruelty shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years and shall also be liable to fine. The offence is Cognizable, non-compoundable and non-bailable.
This section is non-bailable (you have to appear in court and get bail from the judge), non-compoundable (complaint can’t be withdrawn) and cognizable (register and investigate the complaint, although in practice most of the time arrest happens before investigation).
The well being of senior citizens is mandated in the Constitution of India under Article 41. “ The state shall, within its limits of its economic capacity and development , make effective provision for securing the right to public assistance in cases of old age.
There have been countless instances where, without any investigation, the police has arrested elderly parents, unmarried sisters, pregnant sister-in-laws and even 3 year old children. In these cases unsuspecting family of husband has to go through a lot of mental torture and harassment by the corrupt Indian legal system. A typical case goes on for years (5-7 years is typical) and the conviction rate is about 2% only. Some accused parents, sisters and even husbands have committed suicide after time in jail.
False ‘Dowry harassment’ charges to torture in-laws and old :
This seems to be the easiest way to harass old people in India. False bogus dowry harassment charges are filed by miscreants without any fear whatsoever.
And why no fear ? Because there are absolutely no penalties for filing false dowry harassment charges in India ! And also because a mere complaint is enough to arrest without investigation (the offence is cognizable).
I wonder how Elder Abuse is any less in terms of gravity than Dowry Harassment in India !
And what when the fabricators of ‘false dowry harassment charges’ themselves are perpetrators of Elder Abuse in family ?
Or do the government or women NGOs prefer to believe that even in genuine cases of dowry harassment it is OK if Elder Abuse is committed in one’s defense ???
Infact both Judiciary and Police are aware of such malpractices. Even the legislators are aware of rampant misuse of anti-Dowry Laws but they FEAR speaking openly about them.
In the year 2005, 1,34,757 people underwent arrest ,for 58319 complaints under Sec 498-A and Dowry Prohibition Act .

Out of 134757 accused, approximately 18% were not charge sheeted which means 24256 arrests of innocent people were caused only because these acts are non bail able and non-cognizable, which forced the police to arrest the accused, even though the complaints were frivolous.
It is appalling to note that 358 children and 4744 senior citizens were arrested without verification of the veracity of the complaint.
Latest 2010, NCRB data (http://ncrb.nic.in/CII2010/cii-2010/Table%2012.8.pdf ) shows 6471 senior citizens have got arrested under sec -498 A of IPC and 36520 citizens in the age group of 45 – 60 years.

The World Health Organisation reports Lebanon and India as first ranking countries for legal abuse of elders and explicitly mentions the dowry law as a tool for rampant abuse of elders in India.( Document no WHO/NMH/VIP/02.1,WHO/NMH/NPH//02.2 Title Missing Voices. http:// www.498a.org/legaltorture.htm) and http://whqlibdoc.who.int/hq/2002/WHO_NMH_VIP_02.1.pdf
As per WHO report on Elderly Abuse in India (http://www.who.int/ageing/projects/elder_abuse/alc_ea_ind.pdf ) “Daughters-in-law” was the “problem” in both the groups. While both the groups stressed on the lack of caring attitude by the daughters in law, women of the lower socio-economic class got very vocal about the fact that daughters in law were misusing the law, by reporting harassment by in-laws to the police, leading to maltreatment by the police to the in-laws.
It is a well known fact that normally in the context of Indian society and culture aged old parents normally stay with their son and daughter-in-law in the last leg of their life. It is being increasingly noticed as a trend that often such aged parents are tortured and harassed by the daughter-in-law and are exploited due to the fact that they are old, weak, ailing and do not have a place to live in the older age. Unlike the Western countries where there are shelter homes provided by government, in India such aged, elderly parents have to depend upon their son and daughter-in-law for their survival, medical treatment and care etc. This is also a fact of the life that once a person cross 50+ they suffer from various ailments for which they need extra care, affection treatment extra etc. A modern, young, well educated and working daughter-in-law considers age old parents of her husband a burden on her, as she needs to take care of them and also because she considers them an inhibition on her freedom to life.
“This is a well known fact that misuse of dowry laws (IPC 498A) and other women protected laws like Domestic Violence Act now has become a well recognized problem in India. Increasing number of aged old parents in the husband’s family are falsely accused and arrested and thrown out of their houses under these laws and find them defenseless against legal terror unleashed thereafter.
“Over the years, various responsible agencies including Indian Judiciary has stressed on the need for amending these atrocious laws. A report on ‘Elder Abuse in India’ by the United Nations, talks of dowry laws in India that girls are misusing to harass their aged, elder in-laws. Aged parents, after struggling lifelong and after discharging various duties and responsibilities such as education of the children, house and marriage of the children wants a peaceful life in the old age. But as is found by various research reports by various NGO’s across India, they suffer the most in case the marriage of their son and daughter-in-law ends in dispute. Under the dreaded and dangerous IPC 498A,the elderly parents of the husband are immediately arrested and sent to prison, just on a written false complaint of the daughter-in-law. After a struggling life the elderly parents have to undergo the harrowing and humiliating experience of prison and police station.
IPC 498A has brought in large scale elder abuse. Apart from undergoing humiliation and harassment in the police station, courts etc and after running after the court for many years are acquitted. Such acquittal is meaningless as over the years these aged parents go through depression, disease, harassment, humiliation, torture etc.
Along with IPC 498A, Domestic Violence Act also has become a cause of worry for the innocent elders on whom false cases under these laws are being booked. Under the Domestic Violence Act, if a daughter-in-law gives a complaint to the magistrate then the entire family of the husband including his aged old parents is thrown out from the house and is forced to stay away from their own house which they had built after years of struggle with their lifelong savings. In the name of protecting ‘a young married wife’ senior citizens are abused and are humiliated by a system which is insensitive to the needs of elderly people.
Recommendations :
Senior citizens should not be indicted and arrested under Sec- 498- A of IPC. Suitable recommendations should be given to Law Commission and Law Ministry. Due consideration should be given to the heath and age of the elderly people.
The National Policy on Senior Citizens 2011 mandates, the elderly be protected against abuse and stringent punishment for the abuse of the elderly Create “Prevention of Domestic Violence against Senior Citizens Act”, to enable elderly citizens to file complaints against members of the shared household and seek protection and restraining order.
Grievance Redressal Cells should be formed in National Commission for Senior Citizens to enable senior citizens to lodge their complaints.
Looking forward to your support.

with the tax exemption for senior citizens, 60+ going to 2,50,000/- and for still senior 80+ being 5,00,000/-, our older adults are happier lot. Virtually a senior citizens falling below these limits, has no income tax return to file if they have no other income except pension. Income Tax slabs 2012 does not differentiate between a male and a female senior citizen.

ar Mr. Jorawar Singh, Good Afternoon Please refer to our today’s phone conversation. My name is Prasad Kulkarni and I am residingat Ahluwalia Colony, Gurdial Enclave, Chandigarh Road, Ludhiana. My family consists of my wife & one daughter ( 14 years old ). Me & my wife are working couples. I work as Head -Global Business at Eastman Impex in Ludhiana and my wife is working in Sales & Administration Department at Green Planet in Jalandhar City. Earlier my mother-in-law used to stay with us and then it was my mother’s turn. We have a maid working with us for daily house hold chores like cleaning, washing of clothes & utensils. Now it is not feasible for my mother & mother-in-law to stay with us. Hence we are looking out for a senior lady who can stay with us to play the same role in the house hold as my mother & mother-in-law used to. We do not expect her to do the regular house hold work except to take care of our daughter. Moreover the presence of a senior lady in the house will imbibe good values & principles to my daughter’s upbringing which is a foremost concern for me & my wife. Hope you have understood our requirements and we look forward to receive a reply from your end. best regards Prasad Kulkarni Mob. 91 9915533836

Dear dada dadi,
I am from delhi and was going through the various senior citizen websites for help and guidance. One of the site which impressed me was yours.
The website is made well ,but I am not sure the people in your ngo are
what I can feel -nice and genuine.
Enclosed is a true story of a grand lady from politics, who people will not take it seriously. it is a true story not from her but what her grandson has experienced in reality .This is just a small part of the actual feeling which her grandson feels for our british laws and what they have does to the people sitting and deciding our futures in judiciary, parliament, government or the press.
I am looking for guidance from an organisation which can help from the heart .i want the government not to treat senior citizens like beggers and keep droping sweets when it is their choice.I want to give the common man the basics ,which is their right and our senior citizens everything which they proudly deserve.
Please help me filing a PIL in supreme court of india to get what I want to give to my elders at any cost.

With reference to query posted above by Vivek Kaul; i want to know that if we want to draft a PIL for the person , or as a organisation.
Also various high courts have specific rules to file a PIL; i believe this person would want to file in Delhi high court.
One of the important criteria for filing a PIL is that there must not be any vested interest of the person filing the petition, so if you want to fight for the rights of your grandmother, consider filing a writ petition under Article 226 of the Indian constitution, but for the concerns regarding the general wellbeing of elders, a Public Interest Litigation should be filed as you already mentioned.
Now as you aked about what i felt towards this email. I would not take much of your time regarding this and would mention a few point briefly:
I agree that in our legal system there is a lot of delay and expense towards litigation and many people suffer because of that. The thing is , i believe a lot is being done regarding these issues too and I have full faith in the judicial sytem of our country. Though we have one of the most comprehensive law , there can always be the loopholes and people utilise them to their benefit.
2. With context to not granting of exemption from being present due to valid reason by elder people ( my personal feeling : I dont think that can be true, we are listening from just one prospective), I think a writ petition along with all the detail of the proceedings and medical certificate and/or reports in the high court will set the matters right in case this did happen. If in case, this was the case then it a gross violation of fundamental rights and a very serious issue which we should protest against, legally and maybe through our website.
3. We cannot accuse judge in general of dishonesty and DadaDadi is strongly against use of such a language as used above.
“A dishonest judge in lower courts hearing in different states cases at different levels, will try the compromise method by calling the accused through their lawyers to give his bidding amount to decide cases. There is honesty in the system. He will call the winning case lawyer to charge x amount If he agrees, otherwise the offer will increase to 2x in case he decides in favour of the loser.”
Its a very greivious charge and the person who says something like that in his petition might invite a fine along with quashing of his PIL.
4. As for change in taxation rules, free medical and legal aid, travel rate exemptions and other issue, a PIL can be filed…. change in our laws regarding old people that they should be charged in rarest of rare case is , according to me, require a broader thinking perspective.
Drafting a PIL for this person or on our behalf, would require a lot of legal research and frankly would like us to brainstorm and put up a draft in the issues which we come across very often.
Yours Sincerely,
Harleen kaur

Dear Sohan,
Greetings!
I had gone through your email.
Q: I searched about your organisation on internet and interested to know that can you help us regarding a senior member of my family
A: We were left wondering what kind of help you are looking for your father in law. Were you looking for a domestice help in a village, or were you looking for an old age home for him? Well in either case, we have neither put on nor provide these services.
Q: He is my father inlaw living alone in a village near phagwara and my wife is his only daughter living with me in vancouver city of Canada
A: So till age of 80 which is a very ripe age, he was left to managing of his? This is a clear cut case of negligence towards “Senior citizens and parents” under an Indian Act under the same name. An NGO or any one interested can file a case against such people who are going to be his legal hiers, for such negligence. Well these are the services which we do.
Q: He has no son or any other family memeber to look after him and he is not agree to leave India. He is about 80 years old now. We are worried about him because in this age he needs help. we need help from your organisation.
A: Well being fully aware that he needs this support to have some one look after him, the only alternate that came to your mind was being “Worried” and then google our an organisation and tell them to take care without even realisation what the organisation is into. This is a clear cut case of neglect for the parents. He raised your wife, and sent her with you, but then you thought rest is someone else’s responsibility may be a govt organisations, may be NGOs but not yours. Well in India, so far no one has a legal right to Social security, leave aside asking it or even expecting it from a private organisation like ours.
Q: I have a question regarding existence and working of Dada dadi organization
A: DadaDadi is a registered non profit organisation into advocacy for senior citizen rights from the govt and is now functioning for over three years.
Q: Is this organization is working and serving the senior citizens in real sense or just a organization on papers and on web site.
A: We do not have staff, we are all like minded individuals who respect old age, and we not only take care of our parents but where ever possible, try to devise solutions for such parents, whoes sons and daughters are rendered incompetent to help them.
Q: I requested few days back for help of my old age father in law living in India.
A: The help is a very wide term. HAd you mentioned some specific requirement who could have suggested something. What we could understand that you needed someone to be with him, in place of his daughter in his last days, as the email did not reflect any crisis situation.
Q: Unfortunately he is no more.He died on 22nd of January
A: 80 is a good age for a person, left to fend for himself and managing of his own.
Q: I am still thinking that is this organization helping the old age people in real life or just a fake organization or a fund raiser
A: we have lots of success storied in forcing govt to bring in laws and schemes. for your information, we have so far never accepted any kind of donation from anyone, individual, organisation, or Government. so definately we are not a fund raiser.
Sincerely,
regards:

Understanding the fact that women often misuse the domestic violence
Act to claim their right of residence at mother-in-law’s house, the
Delhi high court on Tuesday directed a woman to vacate her mother-in-
law house and stay at some other accommodation so that the latter’s
health is not affected.
A division bench of justices Pradeep Nandrajog and SP Garg turned down
the plea of Poonam (name changed) and directed her to vacate the house
of her mother-in-law Sunita (name changed) keeping in mind the
latter’s serious health problem.
“The constant strife with the newly married daughter-in-law in her
house would certainly have an adverse effect on the mother-in-law,”
the court ruled and directed Piyush (name changed), the husband, to
cough out a monthly rent of Rs 30,000 to Poonam.
The court’s ruling came on a plea of Poonam who had sought right of
residence at her mother-in-law’s place under the domestic violence
Act.
Under the Act, a woman can claim right of residence or the rent amount
from her husband.
Piyush and Poonam who were married in 2009 had a strained relationship
from the beginning, which led the couple to shift to other house in
the national capital on rent so that his mother’s health would not get
deteriorated.
Piyush is currently pursuing his MBA from Hyderabad while Poonam is
working with a MNC here. Explaining the rights of a daughter-in-law, the court said, “The right of residence, which a wife undoubtedly has, does not mean the right to reside in a particular property. It may, of course, mean the right to reside in a commensurate property. But it can certainly not translate into a right to reside in a particular property.”
“It is only in that property in which the husband has a right, title
or interest that the wife can claim residence and that too, if no
commensurate alternative is provided by the husband,” the court added.
In the present case, the property belongs to Sunita, which she
inherited from her father. Senior advocate Geeta Luthra, who appeared for Piyush, told DNA, “This is the first of its kind ruling where the court declined to give any relief to the woman in domestic violence case as this is a fit case wherein the court considered the health aspect as the prime.”
The court also directed Piyush to pay a monthly maintenance of Rs
45,000 to Poonam. Earlier also, the court has ruled that a woman can seek a share in her husband’s property but cannot claim a right to share the house of her in-laws.

BANGALORE: Once Pensioners’ Paradise, Bangalore is no longer a safe place for elders. The Report on Elder Abuse and Crime in India shows that Bangalore tops elder abuse cases with 44% reporting ill-treatment.
While Mumbai and Bangalore reported the highest percentage of elderly who fear further abuse, Hyderabad and Bangalore recorded the highest for feeling a sense of shame in the community.
The findings are from a study by the NGO HelpAge India across nine cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Bhopal, Chennai, Patna, Hyderabad and Bangalore. The sample size was 900, with 100 elderly persons per city (50 men and 50 women). The population of elderly persons is estimated at 9.6 million across the country and 8 lakh in Bangalore.
One-fifth of the elderly (22%) have experienced abuse. “While Bangalore tops elder abuse cases (44%), it’s followed by Hyderabad (38%), Bhopal (30%) and Kolkata (23%). The lowest is Chennai (2%),” the report said.
The report observed that on a national level, elder abuse is highest among the 70-plus and mostly elderly women due to their dependence on sons.
More than half (51%) of elderly feel there’s been an increase in incidents of elder abuse in the past three years. The report said that the daughter-in-law was the major abuser (63.4%), followed by son (44%) from the lower socio-economic strata.
Dependency was high among elderly with their main source of income being remittance from children with was nationally 55%.

Dear All,
I thank you all for your esteemed advice and help that you have extended to me.
I am going to file a complaint with the local tribunal and would keep you updated on the proceedings Hope my initiative could help many other old parents who are suffering at the hand of their children.
My mother has not transferred her property to any one she holds the property it in her name, however she is handicap and dependent on others for her daily requirements and could not continue to remain in her own house in an hostile environment. We would ask for vacating her house and lets see how the justice is delivered.
I would seek more of your help and advice as the proceedings move forward.

Dear Sir/ma’m,
With respect to the email you sent regarding legal remedy for Smt Pushpa Devi Dala Rajasthan, i would suggest the following measures:
1. The best and the speediest method to help Pushpa Devi Dalal would be through the tribunals set up by the State in compliance with section 7 of maintenance and welfare of parents and senior citizens Act , 2007.
2. We need to know if Pushpa Devi has legally given her property to her son residing in the property,
if yes , she can demand maintenance from him which allows her to reside in a dignified way.( including medical expenses)
If she hasn’t gifted her property legally to her son, she has two options:
A. She can ask her son to vacate her house.
or , if she wants him to stay with her
She can ask for maintenance from him and her other legal hiers.
3. The maintainance tribunals have a transparent process, you @ dadadadi.org or the daughter of Pushpa Devi can easily represent her in the tribunal by writing an application. You can also take help from the Maintenance Officer who can represent the senior citizen.
4.This procedure is fast, once you file an application, a notice will be given to the son and within 90 days ( maximum 120 days)of giving the notice the case would be decided, you need not worry about the local influence as these tribunals are liable to Appelate Tribunals in case you are aggrieved with the decision of the District Tribunal.

Harleen

Though there are no specific sections against harassment of senior citizens by children/ daughter in law, they can file a case under:
1. Domestic violence Act 2005 ( its only when the violence is against women)
2. Under chapter V and chapter VI of maintenance and welfare of parents and senior citizens Act, if the legal hiers of the senior citizen fail to provide due care or abandon the parent, they can be tried under this Act and punished ( imprisonment of 3 months or fine or both).
Along with that there are certain cases where the children forcefully take away the property of the senior citizen; this transfer of property can be deemed to be void legally under this Act.
3. Other than this , the states have sometimes special provisions to help the elderly. And generally these cases are fast tracked so that theres minimum grievience to the senior citizens.
Hope you find this information useful. I am sorry for the delay this time.

Harleen

I am the daughter of the victim(Pushpa Devi Dalal,a Senior Citizen) a widow myself. My mother is a senior citizen and has been suffering from many ailments and diseases prominently being diabetes. She also had her limbs amputated due to gangrene and is unable to walk and complete her daily chores without personal support(since early 2006 or prior). My father expired in Oct 2006.My mother has a house in her name
In June 2009, my mother(the victim, Pushpa Devi Dalal) allowed my brother(Vinod Kumar Dalal) and his family to stay in her house after he had left his job and had came down to stay with my mother in Udaipur, Rajasthan merely out of sympathy for him, but my brother and her wife subsequently started ill treating/abusing/ physically assaulting my mother with the intent that she be driven out of her home and that they (my brother Vinod Kumar Dalal and his family) may forcefully occupy the property. My mother now stays with her other children often hoping from place to place and from one sibling’s house to other. She is not able to stay at her own home(which has all amenities in place keeping with her ill health and which might not be readily available at her other children’s house) while my brother is forcefully occupying the property owned by my mother.
My mother had filed a case after undergoing ill treatment at the hands of my brother and his family for almost 6 months under Domestic Violence Act and Women’s Protection Act 2005, in Jan 2010 which is still sub judice.
Now the intent here is to seek your advice since I have been told by our lawyers that the court cannot vacate/evict the house from my brother under the present case that is going on in the court. The only benefit of this case would be to provide some aid as maintenance and medical expenses and that a separate case has to be filled under civil courts(which laws and how soon would that be disposed once filed is something ambiguous) to get the house vacated from my brother.
I wanted to understand what is the best legal remedy(to file a new case, if at all) available to my mother in present situation and under which laws(State Laws or Union Laws) her own home could be vacated/evicted from my brother and handed over to my mother in the shortest period of time (given normal legal cases may take too long) so that my mother could live her remaining life(which is quite uncertain given her health conditions) in peace at her own home
I have also learned about laws for senior citizens welfare (MAINTENANCE & WELFARE OF PARENTS & SENIOR CITIZENS ACT, 2007) but these involve district authorities and my brother uses his influence with district authorities and police to mitigate all efforts, therefore pl advice a judicial process that could be implemented in a time bound manner and is practically feasible.
I would appreciate if references to similar cases where the justice has been delivered could be brought to my knowledge.
Thanks and regards

The Govt should sympathetically consider to provide small weapon & License in nominal price for the safety of Senior Citizens, those in need & even though without weapons their license should not be cancelled till he is alive .The Seized small weapons are plenty with Govt after sizers. Senior Citizens’ life is very risky now a days as they remain alone or in their children’s house as watch & ward & physically not capable to fight the trespassers. Hence my appeal to Govt of India & all law enforcing & All License granting authorities graciously consider this and help the Senior Citizens & their life.
Senior Citizens are just like Banks Fixed Deposit for the Nation . There life is precious.

They plan to meet at Kolkata on August 15th to chalk out campaigns across India.
With growing concerns about denial of justice and fair treatment in laws and judicial system and with increasing suicides of men due to marital terror, men’s rights activists across India are demanding that “Men have a Right to Stay Alive” and society must not consider the lives of men as cheap or as disposable. We point at the facts like one married man is committing suicide in every 9 minutes and thatintimate terror has no gender bias, while courts deny justice to male victims of intimate terror.
More than 100 Men’s Rights Activists (MRAs) and leaders representing approx. 50,000 members across India will head to Kolkata on 14th August and will convene a National Conference on 15th August to campaign for fair treatment to men in Indian Society and justice system. These MRAs belong to Save Indian Family Foundation and its partner organisations.
This is the 4th Annual Men’s Rights National Conference in India. The previous national conferences were at Goa, Shimla and Yercaud in 2008, 2009, 2010 respectively. It is always held on August 15th as a protest and men avoid taking sweets or sugar in tea/coffee on that day.
Men’s Rights activists today have no enthusiasm to celebrate August 15th as Independence Day, as they no longer feel any sense of freedom inside India’s biased justice system. “Staying alive” is a struggle for Indian men today.
Many women have also started championing for men’s rights, opposing anti-male bias in the laws and growing misandry (hatred against males) in the society. They are also demanding gender neutral laws. As a norm, men are facingextortion as demands of huge alimony after marriage. Recently, a woman demanded Rs.1 crore (10 million) in court as alimony from her husband, a software engineer after 2 years of marriage. Biased Laws have converted marriage into a business now.
Men’s Rights Activists (MRAs) are asserting that intimate terror has no gender bias and as thousands of men are dying due to intimate or marital terror. While, there are scores of laws to for women there are none to protect men or their families from torture by wives or their powerful family members.
The suicides of males due to intimate terror are almost always dismissed as accidental deaths and police never files FIRs, even when the man has written a suicide note blaming torture and abuse by wife as the cause of him taking this extreme step. However, if a woman commits suicide due to even mental problems, not only the husband, but also his parents are jailed for causing her death by a mere complaint by woman’s parents. Media also sensationalises these female deaths, while ignoring suicides of males due to marital terror as there is no such law for men.
Last years, about 58000 married men committed suicide compared to 31000 married women. According to National Crime Records Bureau, 18441 men compared to 11641 women committed suicide due to family reasons (and marital terror), while only 5089 men committed suicide due to poverty and bankruptcy. So, it is very clear that men need laws to protect them from marital terror. However, Government and courts are not listening. Due to this, men are finding it difficult to stay alive.
With increase in separations, divorces and multiple court cases, many men are losing jobs or are completely unable to carry on with their professions due to stress and depression. However, courts are rarely sympathetic to such men and order them to pay huge alimonies to wives every month. Many men are also thrown out of their own houses without verifying facts or truth, when wife files a false case of domestic violence in the court. These men are on the streets now.
Demands by Men’s Rights Activists (MRAs):
1) A special Domestic Violence act for men must be enacted at Parliament to prevent rise of men’s suicides due to marital terror by wives.
2) Tenure of Marriage must be considered by courts, while awarding alimony. Less alimony for short marriages and more for long marriages.
3) No alimony to working women (without children), if they earnsalaries more than Rs.20,000 per month.
4) Men must not be thrown out of their houses in domestic violence cases.
5) Shared parenting of Children must be considered as default arrangement by courts instead of encouraging prolonged child custody disputes.
6) Courts must tell highly educated women to work instead of telling husbands to pay huge sums of money as alimony or maintenance to wife every month.
Annexure-1
The most frequent reason for suicide of men is “family problems”, not economic problems as often perceived. The suicides of men increased rapidly with economic growth in last 15 years.
Gender wise, Statistics of number of victims of Murders, Suicides and Accidents all over India

In 2009, 2008 and 2007 the dowry death convictions are 1882, 1948 and 1946 respectively.
These dowry deaths are too small a number for a country of 1.2 billion people.

So, who is more vulnerable in Indian Society? The males or females?
Who is more likely to be a victim? A male or a female? …

Dear Sir/Madam,
I have heard very good things about your organisation. I am looking for a place of stay for my mother in law. She lost her husband in 2008 and had moved to Norway with her son right after . Unfortunately she overstayed her stay there hoping to get a permanent staus of stay, but that did not happen and she was deported.both her sons are in norway and only one is willing to take care of her financial needs but he cannot afford to stay in India.
Beeji is at present living with her daughter at Patiala and her other daughter is in Dasuya (Hoshiarpur) One in Hoshiarpur cannot keep her because her In-Laws do not want it. Today Our brother in law in Patiala has threaten to throw her out and has requested my brother in Law in Norway to take her away.
We are settled in Canada and are willing to have beeji here but it will take 3- 4 years for her immigration and she may not get it because of her health conditions. Myself and my wife are willing to travel to India and get her settled in a old age home if you can find a suitable place for her. We are willing to Pay all her expenses Yearly in advance and are commirted to help her financialy and will bare her on going health costs.
hoping for an Early reply

The Inspector General of Police
Chandigarh.
Subject: Regarding issue of threats of beating and killing and turning out of the house, - inaction and contempt of court in the order of Honorable High Court of Punjab and Haryana, in Criminal Misc No M-18214 of 2011.
Sir,
This is to bring to your notice that, I, Chota Singh, aged about 80+ years, resident of House No 35, Village Attawa, UT Chandigarh, have been staying in this house with my 80+ years old wife, Karnail Kaur since 1979.
That, I am owner of this house and was in complete possession of this house.
That, one of my sons, Jarnail Singh, aged about 42 years, has been physically assaulting me and sometimes pushing me so as to cause me to fall, with a sole motive that I die, and he takes on the property to his own use. Yesterday, also he hit me and pushed me against the wall and tried suffocating me.
That, I had disentitled him from my all properties and wanted to have no relations with him
That, to give you the entire picture, I wish to bring to your knowledge that seeing his this attitude, as he apologised to me about 10 years back, and I allowed him to stay on the top floor of my house, with a condition that he will not interfere with my peaceful life.
That, last year, in October 2010, he had come to me to express a wish to get married and wanted to use the house during this period as our relatives were supposed to come over for the ceremony.
That, to make my both ends meet, I had rented out one portion to 3 tenants who used to pay me a rent of about 6500/-.
That, due to emotions, I agreed and got my house vacated for the marriage of my son and allowed the use of first floor and a portion of ground floor for the ceremony.
That, after the marriage and completion of the rituals, I asked my son to vacate the first floor and ground floor portion and shift back to the top floor, but instead of shifting and vacating, he of his own, forcibly without my permission and consent, rented out the top floor to one of his known and started threatening me that if I move out of my house, he will beat me and even kill me.
That, given my age, I was both emotionally and physically weak so I could not resist or raise a voice against him, due to fear of my life and physical assaults. As he was also usurping my rental income by renting out the top floor, I became financially incapable of taking any action against him, and was under virtual house arrest and wrongful confinement and restraint. When he used to go out, he used to instruct his tenant to keep me confined inside the house.
That, in April, he started denying me the basic food and water, and started hitting me and insulting me every day, and then I gained courage and reported the matter to the nearest police post.
That, his misdoings did not stop, and thereafter, on May 7, 2011, he tried strangulating my wife, and then we filed a formal complaint dated 9-5-2011, before SHO Sahib, Sector 36, Chandigarh but to my dismay, no action was taken by the police.
That, emboldened by this non-action, he continued to beat me and my wife, offs and on and then we again filed a representation to the SSP Office on 26/5/2011.
That, on coming to know of our complaint of May 26, 2011, on the morning of May 30, 2011 he threatened us that he will get me arrested by Police and implicate me in some false cases.
That, same day evening, I was arrested by the Police under section 107/151 CrPC citing that I, an eighty years plus old man, who cannot see properly and walk without a stick can harm a fit man of 42 years. This is pertinent to mention that since my son is a property dealer and keeps on dealing in disputed properties, he himself is physically strong as well as, is maintaining close relations with the Police Department to conduct his property dealing business.
That, all the above acts on part of my son and his known tenant, (who’s identity is also known to us) amounts to various offence under the IPC, including but not limiting to, threating, criminal intimidation, house arrest, wrongful confinement & restraint, physical assault, criminal trespass, cheating, unlawful gain of my rental income etc.
That, after all this, I reached an NGO DadaDadi Society (Regd) for support and they suggested filing of a writ petition before the High Court.
The Honourable High Court, in its order dated June 3, 2011, has termed the filing of this petition unfortunate and directed the Senior Superintendent of Police, Chandigarh to enquire into the matter and take necessary steps required under the law.
That, DSP concerned at Sector 36, called us to the DSP office and told us that we should stop taking any advice from the NGO or advocates and even did not allow, the NGO representative Sh Jorawer Singh to represent our case before him, at the first instance. Further, he told us that this is a case of Civil Dispute and that he will be closing the case accordingly and nothing further can be done by the Police in this matter. He further advised that High Court may have erred in marking this to the SSP as this matter comes in the preview of civil administration instead and asked us to file a civil suite for eviction of my son and the unknown tenant.
That, today, we are once again emboldened by the decision of Police Complaint Authority (PCA) in the matter of Wing Cmndr AS Dhillon Retd, which also had a similarly placed circumstance, as far as, illegal occupation of the portions of his house by a tenant, wherein, PCA has termed the noting of DSP Vijay Kumar, “…Since it a landlord-tenant dispute, no further action is warranted” as unwarranted and biased.
That, since PCA is also in concurrence with our view that, the unlawful possession of my house by my son, Sh Jarnail Singh and his known tenant, amounts to the continued criminal trespass, you are requested to register a FIR in this matter invoking all sections of IPC as deemed fit including but not limited to sections 323, 339, 340, 357, 380, 405, 420, 447, 448, 503.
This is our last hope from the Police administration so please consider it on priority and with the due sensitivity for hapless and unfortunate Senior Citizens.
Thanking you,
Yours Truly,
Chota Singh s/o sh Gurdial Singh

Aerika Singh, Chandigarh, June 3, 2011: Terming this petition before it “unfortunate”, Honorable Justice Alok Singh of Punjab & Haryana High Court, today, has directed the City Superintendent of Police to enquire into the matter in a complaint filed by two senior citizens seeking protection of life and liberty from their own son and daughter in law. Senior Citizens Chota Singh and his wife both aged above 80, had earlier complained to the local police against physical abuse by their own son, an influential property dealer. With police showing total insensitivity to the plight of hapless parents, and instead arresting Chota Singh, alleging threatening behavior from a fragile & feeble old man of 80+ suffering from various old age ailments, DadaDadi.org a local NGO for Senior Citizens, had to step in. “This problem is now wide spread which needs to be addressed immediately and Administration should take immediate steps for effective implementation of Maintenance & Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007” says Jorawer Singh, who took up this couple’s case at DadaDadi.

Jorawer Singh, Mhow (MP), March 10: An arrest warrant has been issued today by the court for non-appearance of the son in the case filed by the neglected senior citizen parents. Earlier, A Sub-Divisional Magistrate had issued a notice to their mechanical engineer son for allegedly neglecting his aged parents. Ms Deepti Chopra, president of MP chapter of Dadadadi, after detecting the precarious condition of these older adults, explained and educated them of their rights and eventually Dr S M Jafri (75) and his wife Naseem Jafri (72), residents of Birdi House locality, were able to file a complaint under the Senior Citizens’Welfare and Maintenance Act, 2008.
S M Jafri alleges in his plea that Arshad refuses to look after them, despite earning a very good salary. The senior Jafri retired as an Assistant Director of Veterinary Services. Under the Act, a senior citizen can seek a court order directing children, or grandchildren, to pay maintenance. A person can be sentenced to imprisonment if he/she fails to pay maintenance upon court’s order.
“Normally, we try to persuade the children to take care of their parents and not to neglect them, but only in very extreme cases, we resort to the legal means, like this.” said Ms Sukhbir, President, National body, DadaDadi.org, congratulating Deepti for her selfless dedication to the cause of senior citizens, further expecting that “if given an appropriate publicity to such matters, the children will start understanding their obligations of their own, much before the parents even think of taking the legal resort.”

Dear members / Senior citizens,
We take this opportunity to present before you the findings of our recent survey conducted to understand, concerns and problem areas pertaining to senior citizens, so that we can focus our efforts and channelize the energies in the right direction. We are thankful to Jorawer Singh, our Executive- Operation for his and his company’s support in conducting and presenting the study to us.
We are, here, discussing only five of the top six areas of concerns which have come out of the study, and leaving security and safety for action later.
Though, without exception, almost every one pointed out towards deteriorating law and order situation, security, safety and criminal assaults as a major concern for senior citizens. We believe that this aspect as such need a complete overhaul for everyone, young and old alike, and even in the improved situations, the senior citizens being physically weak & emotionally gullible will always need more than normal effort for ensuring their security and safety.
But why are our senior citizens, physically weak and emotionally gullible and have been left to defend and fend for themselves of their own? The study suggests that children or inheritors are wanting in some aspects and we have come out with. Let us see these one by one:
39% of concerns are related to lack of support –physical / attendant support.
We realize that senior citizens need some kind of attendant support in terms of doing small tit-bit works, like moving of furniture, updating bank accounts, arranging for some daily use stuff, plumbing, housekeeping, related area. These were normally done by sons, daughter-in-laws or even by grand children or some existing household help in conventional families. This support is disappearing, as adults are both working, grand children have more study loads, and with increasing awareness on child-labour, household help is also not available. Though some are adopting to internet solutions for payment of bills, sourcing of goods/services, vedio chats but this is only a very small 5-7% of urban population.
Staying with daughter
Social norms are coming in way of those senior citizens, who had female children, as they do not even want to stay with their married and willing daughters, as it is considered a stigma to stay at daughter’s house or take a financial or otherwise support from daughter. While with honorable supreme court’s ruling of equal inheritance rights for sons and daughters, sons also now feel an equal responsibility of daughters in taking care of old parents.
1) Male children are paying lesser attention on this, or showing indifference.
2) Spouse is working and not perceiving equal responsibility towards in-laws.
3) Trained attendants not available at an affordable cost.
4) No agency/system in place to check reliability or accountability of available attendants.
5) Attendants found to be taking undue advantage of senior citizens.
6) Value systems of respect for grandparents is on decline.
26% of concerns are on account of indifference to the needs of Senior citizens
Besides some, “can’t do without them” needs, there are some implied needs or desires of the senior citizens, ranging from taking them for a walk, ensuring periodic health checks to just listening to them for sometimes on day to day basis. These implied needs are expectations, which senior citizens are feeling too shy to ask for aloud, but expect these to be fulfilled without asking.
1) Children not realizing or ignoring their responsibilities.
2) Elders too insecure to speak out beyond minimum survival needs
3) No NGO / agency to support elders on voicing their concerns.
16% feel lack of forums for meeting social and emotional needs
The erstwhile method of all senior citizens of village, coming together at “Sath” in the village every evening, has no replacement in semi-urban or urban setups.
1) So called Generation Gap
2) Lack of emotional maturity of new generation and too much of financial and performance pressure on earning members.
3) The community centers not serving the desired purpose or are not being promoted in right perspective by agencies.
4) Senior citizen councils, associations, acting more like self-help groups of a few active members.
14% of concerns are about senior citizens living below their expected standard or dignity
Even one of the new NGO is called the dignity foundation, implying that yes, this is an emerging concerns, where senior citizens feel “This was not how I planned my retired life to be!” resulting in psychological and erratic emotional behavior.
1) Employment opportunities, self employment opportunities missing.
2) Reverse mortgages not so prevalent.
5% concerns on accessing the government infrastructure
Irrespective of the level and quality of the government infrastructure available, it still is not a major concern, perhaps, the bottleneck is accessing the available facilities. Senior citizens are aware of large number of welfare programmes, special benefits, pension schemes, discounted travel and higher interest rates, but they either do not have support to help them access these or they do not trust those who are available and can help them with these.
1) Complex procedures to avail benefits
2) Paper work / formalities not commensurate with energy levels in Senior citizens.
3) Trust in children / relatives is amiss.
We hope that these points which have emerged out of this valuable study need further deliberation among us and let us all come together in deciding the areas, where we need to work, align the government agencies and NGO’s so that we touch where the shoe pinches the most.
With warm regards,
On behalf of entire DadaDadi Team.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia / Utusan Malaysia / January 2, 2011
Snow on the roof does not mean there is no fire inside house.
A 110-year-old Malaysian man who has been looking for a wife said he was ready to marry again after an 82-year-old woman responded to his wish, a report said.
Ahmad Mohamad Isa, who has 20 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren, told Malay-language newspaper Utusan Malaysia earlier this week that he wanted company and a wife to take care of him.
The report grabbed the attention of 82-year-old Sanah Ahmad, a widow of 30 years and mother of nine, who said she was willing to do so and had asked her children to contact Ahmad’s family to make arrangements.
“It doesn’t matter who she is, as long as she can cook for me,” Ahmad told the paper, saying he was happy and surprised at the news while his daughter would discuss the matter with Sanah’s family.
“It is lonely to live alone and I am afraid to sleep alone. If I have a wife she can take care of me,” the centenarian, who has five previous marriages and suffers mild hearing and vision problems, said in an earlier interview.
Four of his wives have died and he divorced the fifth.
Sanah told the paper that she was attracted to Ahmad as he bears a striking resemblance to her late husband and both men shared the same name.

My nurse friend sent this and encouraged me to post it and spread the word.
I agree.
If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks.
Seriously…
Please read:
STROKE IDENTIFICATION:
During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) .she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.
They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening
Ingrid’s husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don’t die. they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
It only takes a minute to read this…
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke…totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.
RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the ‘3′ steps, STR . Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. It is sunny out today.)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency numberimmediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
New Sign of a Stroke ——– Stick out Your Tongue
NOTE: Another ’sign’ of a stroke is this: Ask the person to ’stick’ out his tongue.. If the tongue is ‘crooked’, if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

This is another important judgment which says that a wife can be ordered by a judge to vacate the self acquired property of her parents in law even if she is living in that house.
This is for your encyclopedia of judgments.(copy from - http://indiankanoon.org/doc/162993/)
IN THE HIGH COURT OF DELHI AT NEW DELHI + Crl.M.C. No. 540/2009 Reserved on: 13th January, 2010
Pronounced on: 25th January, 2010
# UMESH SHARMA ….. Petitioner ! Through: Mr. Murari Tiwari, Adv. Versus
$ STATE ….. Respondent ^ Through: Mr.C.M.Verma for R-2 * CORAM:
HON’BLE MR. JUSTICE V.K. JAIN
1. Whether the Reporters of local papers may be allowed to see the judgment? No
2. To be referred to the Reporter or not? Yes
3. Whether the judgment should be
reported in the Digest? Yes : V.K. JAIN, J.
1. This is a petition under Section 482 of the Code of Criminal Procedure challenging the Order of the learned Sessions Judge dated 29th January, 2009, whereby he directed respondent No.2, Shri Satish Chand Sharma, husband of the petitioner-Umesh Sharma to pay rent of Rs.5,000/- per month to her for maintaining an alternative accommodation w.e.f. 7 th February, 2009. The petitioner was directed to vacate the shared household within 15 days of receiving the first payment of Rs.5,000/-.
2. A perusal of the Order dated 16th April, 2008, passed by the learned Metropolitan Magistrate, would show that the Crl.M.C. No. 540/2009 Page 1 of 7 petitioner, Smt. Uma Sharma, filed an application under Section 12 of Protection of Woman from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, seeking restraint order against the respondentsAnirudh Sharma, who is her brother-in-law, Lalita Prasad Sharma, who is her father-in-law and Satish Chand Sharma, who is her husband, alleging torture and cruelty with her, besides demand of dowry and ill-treatment. She sought order restraining the respondents from dispossessing her or her son from shared flat bearing No.A-18-C, Second Floor, Janta Flats, Raghubir Nagar, New Delhi.
3. The respondents contested the application, claiming that house No. A-18-C, Second Floor, Janta Flats, Raghubir Nagar, New Delhi is owned by respondent No.2- Lalita Prasad Sharma. The learned Metropolitan Magistrate restrained the respondents from dispossessing the petitioner from the aforesaid house and from disturbing her possession in any manner. The Order of the learned Metropolitan Magistrate was, however, modified by the learned Additional Sessions Judge, relying upon the decision of Honble Supreme Court in S.R. Batra vs. Taruna Batra 2007 (3) SCC 169.
4. Though the petitioner claims that property No. A-18-C, Second Floor, Janta Flats, Raghubir Nagar, New Delhi, in which she is presently residing, is owned by her husband, admittedly, Crl.M.C. No. 540/2009 Page 2 of 7 the property stands in the name of her father-in-law, respondent No.2, Lalita Prasad Sharma and not in the name of her husband-Satish Chand Sharma. No material has been placed by the petitioner on record from which it may be inferred that the consideration for purchase of the aforesaid flat was paid by her husband and not by her father-in-law. Since flat in question, admittedly, stands in the name of Respondent No.2-Lalita Prasad Sharma, the onus was upon the petitioner to prove that it was purchased from the funds of her husband- Satish Chand Sharma, in the name of his father Shri Lalita Prasad Sharma. Neither there is any document nor any other material on record to discharge the onus, which was placed upon the petitioner. It is a settled proposition of law, if a person claims that the property, standing in the name of another person, is owned by him and not by the person in whose name it stands, the onus is upon the person making such a claim to substantiate the plea taken by him. In Vimlaben Ajitbhai Patel vs. Vatslaben Ashokbhai Patel, 2008 (4) SCC 649, the Honble Supreme Court, inter alia, observed as under: “It is well-settled that apparent state of affairs shall be taken as the real state of affairs. It is not for an owner of the
property to establish that it is his self- acquired property and the onus would be
on the one who pleads contra.”
Crl.M.C. No. 540/2009 Page 3 of 7
5. In the absence of the petitioner, discharging the onus, which the law places upon her, it cannot be accepted that the flat, in which she is residing, is owned by her husband and not by her father-in-law.
6. In S.R. Batra vs. Taruna Batra 2007 (2) SCC (Crl.) 56, the petitioner-wife had, for some time, lived with her husband in the house, owned by her mother-in-law. A learned Single Judge of this Court held that the premises, in which she had resided with her husband, was her matrimonial home and mere change of residence by the husband thereafter would not shift the matrimonial home. It was held by learned Single Judge of this Court that wife was entitled to continue to reside in premises in question, as it was her matrimonial home. The view taken by this Court was, however, not approved by the Honble Supreme Court which, inter alia, held that it could not be said to be shared household within the meaning of Section 2(s) of Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. The Honble Supreme Court rejected the contention made on behalf of the wife that definition of shared household includes a household where the person aggrieved lives or at any stage had lived in a domestic relationship. Rejecting the contention, the Honble Supreme Court, inter alia, observed as under: Crl.M.C. No. 540/2009 Page 4 of 7
26. If the aforesaid submission is accepted, then it will mean that wherever the
husband and wife lived together in the past that property becomes a shared household. It is quite possible that the husband and wife may have lived together in dozens of places e.g. with the husband’s father,
husband’s paternal grandparents, his
maternal parents, uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces etc. If the
interpretation canvassed by the learned
Counsel for the respondent is accepted, all these houses of the husband’s relatives will be shared households and the wife can
well insist in living in the all these houses of her husband’s relatives merely because she had stayed with her husband for some
time in those houses in the past. Such a
view would lead to chaos and would be
absurd.
27. It is well settled that any interpretation which leads to absurdity should not be
accepted
29. As regards Section 17(1) of the Act, in our opinion the wife is only entitled to
claim a right to residence in a shared
household, and a shared household would
only mean the house belonging to or taken on rent by the husband, or the house which belongs to the joint family of which the
husband is a member. The property in
question in the present case neither
belongs to Amit Batra nor was it taken on rent by him nor is it a joint family property of which the husband Amit Batra is a
member, it is the exclusive property of
appellant No. 2, mother of Amit Batra.
Hence it cannot be called a “shared
household”.
7. In view of the authoritative pronouncement of the Honble Crl.M.C. No. 540/2009 Page 5 of 7 Supreme Court in the case of Tarun Batra (supra), the flat, where she is residing and which is owned by her father-in-law, cannot be said to be shared accommodation and she has no legal right to continue to live in that house, except with the consent of her father-in-law, Shri Lalita Prasad Sharma. Since admittedly, respondent Lalita Prasad Sharma, is not agreeable to the petitioner continuing to live in the flat owned by him, no restraint order against the respondents can be passed in respect of the aforesaid flat.
8. The learned Additional Sessions Judge directed payment of Rs.5,000/- p.m. to the petitioner in lieu of residence. During the course of hearing in this Court, respondent No.2, Satish Chand Sharma, husband of the petitioner, agreed to pay Rs.7,000/- p.m. to the petitioner as against Rs.5,000/- p.m., awarded by the learned Additional Sessions Judge.
9. In view of the above discussions, Respondent No.2, Satish Chand Sharma, shall pay Rs.7,000/- p.m. to the petitioner from the date she vacates Flat No. A-18-C, Second Floor, Janta Flats, Raghubir Nagar, New Delhi and hands over its peaceful and vacant possession to her father-in-law. No direction, however, can be given to the petitioner in these proceedings to vacate the aforesaid flat and the consequence of her not vacating the aforesaid flat would be that she would not get amount of Crl.M.C. No. 540/2009 Page 6 of 7 Rs.7,000/- p.m., directed to be paid to her. The petition stands disposed of.

Hello Mr Dev
Greetings!!!
I came to know about the Dada Dadi program while surfing the net and would like to congratulate you all for all the good work you are doing for the seniors of our society. I wish you all very best for all the success.
I am mailing you for a enquiry. I am based in Delhi with myself and my wife both working with a busy schedule of 9-9 in a day. I have my Mother who stays alone at home after we move to our offices. She is not from Delhi and from a small town of my native Saharanpur in U.P. She is living with me after my marriage and since then I have noticed a lonliness in her because of the isolated living style of Metros. In her native she was busy doing all the work by herself and having a gang of neighbours with whome she has spent almost 30 years of her life. But here in Delhi there is nothing great to do for her since neither there are big houses to support and moreover facilities are availbale at a phone call away. I hope you understand since its being a common problem now days with Seniors of society.
Though we call her daily from offices but still she is not finding anything which keep her engage. She is not highly educated and thus preventing herself in engaging her in some educational stuffs. She is very good in Embroidery and other faminine things but keeping her health and eye sight I do not want her to get involve much into it.Moreover these activities will keep her only at home which I do not want.
Suddenly it stuck me that if I make her join some NGO where she can involve herself in some productive way and doing something which she has never done before and gives value to the work which she do.Moreover getting engaged with Organisation like yours she will step out of the home and will see the world with a different perspective. I could have taken her to the Old age homes where she could have made friends and spent time in day, but i want to avoid that since in that case my intention could have been taken in a wrong way ( you know what TV serials depicts these days). I wanted her to do something after which she herself feel great and be happy.
Can you please suggest me the way by which I can make her join your organisation or any program where she can be invloved. Its a humble request of mine to you if you can suggest me any idea.
We stay in Dwarka Delhi and looking for something nearby to start with. Or if any of your members who stay in this area so that I can get in touch with her/him and discuss the issue.
Awaiting your reply
Thanks & regards
Sumit Singhal

You may be aware that a large number of Senior Citizens Federations and confederations at state and national level have come together as one voice to express their disappointment with our rulers over their neglecting the welfare of senior citizens all along. In this connection we are sending herewith as an attachment - a kit containing four important documents - which explain the whole story in great detail.A senior citizens national protest day is planned for 16th August 2010.

I am writing this letter on behalf of Mr. D.N. Kundu with the hope that your organization can help a senior citizen to live his life normally.
My neighbor Mr. D.N. Kundu (B-4/3, Indralok Estate-1, Paikpara, kol-2) is currently going through a miserable life. He is more than 80 years old. He is living with his wife as they have no child. Both the husband and wife are not in good health for a long period of time. The problem starts when Mr Kundu was facing severe financial crisis as he has no source of income and he has no other option to sell his flat. So, he sold his flat to a person with an understanding that they will live in the house till their death. (Flat is having 2 bedrooms, 1 kitchen, 1 dining, 1 veranda and 1 bathroom with 2 exit doors). It was decided that the elder couple will occupy only 1 bedroom (with 1 exit door) only while using the common bathroom. The problem arises when the new owner made an arrangement to restrict the couple to use the bathroom from inside. They restrict it by closing the door from inside and put up an iron gate. Now to use the bathroom the couple has to use the exit door to use bathroom. It is not acceptable to use the bathroom by using the exit door. The maid who is looking after the elder couple for so many years cannot enter the room as the owner of the flat is opposing about that.
The matter was highlighted to the Association of the Estate but they have already said that they can’t do anything as the new owners have already presented her legal rights to use the flat. It is to be noted they have not paid the full amount yet (though they are showing fake documents that they have paid the full amount). We have requested many times to open the Iron Gate so that they can use the bathroom at least from inside but all are in vain.
The new owners are not showing any respect to the elder couple. They are just trying to vacate the room by creating this type of problems. According to Senior Citizen acts 2007, it is completely illegal and inhuman. The condition in which the couple are living cannot be seen.
I am therefore, requesting the concerned authority to kindly look into this matter and take necessary steps to help this aged couple to get justice ASAP.
Regards & Thanks

Unsolicited Advice to Enigmatic Elders
Too many Questions, too few few answers
Dr P Vyasamoorthy
Book 108 pages Size A5. Rs 175 Available at http://pothi.com for online purchase
===
About the book
Having worked with and for senior citizens for about ten years, many
questions relating to why seniors behave in certain typified ways have
puzzled the author. This book is the result of his efforts to find
answers to questions like: Why do senior citizens feel lonely? Why do
they crave to be heard? Why do they turn to religion after retirement?
Why do elders find it difficult to adjust with family members? Most of
the writings have been picked up from his own blogs – the ones that
were better received and read. To add spice to the monotony of too
many WHYs, some reviews of books, blogs and websites of retiree’s
interest are included. A few articles, where many others (senior
citizens) have contributed to the thought content are clubbed under a
section called collective authorship.
About the Author
Dr P Vyasamoorthy describes himself as a Net Savvy moderator of
discussion groups, author, social worker, Homeopath, teacher, senior
citizens activist, industrial librarian, knowledge manager, academic
counselor, email addict, citizen journalist, blogger and information
scientist.
He has written about a hundred articles relating to problems of old
age. He has also compiled one ebook entitled: “Let us Laugh at
ourselves: A Collection of Jokes on the frailties of Old Age”.His
biographic profiles have appeared in Silver Innings, Harmony, Happy
Old Age and AP State Awardee’s citations. He is associated with
several organisations such as APSCCON, Senior Citizens Forum,
Association of Senior Citizens, Society for Serving Seniors, many Old
Age Homes etc. Having been a Net Surfer from 1993, he has left many
searchable footprints on the web.

I do not have any support here in Kolkata and would like to move her to a care facility in New Delhi were I do have some relatives who can visit her and check up on her.
I have arrived here from abroad and have been with my mother for almost a year. I recently married and have left my husband behind to care for my mother.
I am lost as to how to go about this major action without having much time to do the necessary research nor contact an institution if I even know about them.

M/s DEV LAND AND HOUSING LTD (DLH) Builder and Developer - BREACH OF TRUST, FRAUD AND CHEATING
I, Dilip Shah, am senior citizen with age 65 years. This is a complaint against Mumbai based construction company named M/s DEV LAND AND HOUSING LTD (DLH), an ISO 9001-2000 awarded, having its Registered Office at 10th Floor, Dev Plaza, Opp. Andheri Fire Brigade, S.V.Road, Andheri (W), Mumbai. MR. VIJAY THAKORDAS THAKKAR is Chairman and Mg. Director.
In the month of June, 2009, by selling my old flat plus my life-time hard earned money added, I had booked a flat with full payment made at one stroke, in one of the upcoming residential projects of the above referred company M/s DEV LAND AND HOUSING LTD (DLH), the building known as “DEV PRESTIGE” at Veera Desai Road, Andheri (West) Mumbai 400 053. The possession is expected in Dec.2010.
Pursuant to making of full payment to the said Builder, I was requested by the him that since the building plans of the said project were in the final stage for approval with Mumbai Municipal Corporation, I should wait for some time to complete the formalities of issuance of Letter of Allotment of flat which was to be followed by execution and registration of Deed of Transfer and Assignment of the flat proposed to be allotted to me.
I thought his request being genuine and accepted to wait as I had no alternative left since I was in desperate need of flat and the full payment towards the proposed flat was already made.
After completion of waiting period of couple of months when I began the follow-up for claim of my flat in his above referred building known as “DEV PRESTIGE”, the said Builder on the pretext of one reason or the other started dilly-dally the matter and ignored/brushed-aside my repeated requests of execution of Title Documents in my favour.
I had sent numerous emails/messages; phone calls and SMS to Mr. Vijay Thakordas Thakkar, Chairman of the above Company and his advocate for completing the Specific Performance. I regret to mention here that none of my messages was replied and the said Builder continued to maintain mysterious silence over the matter without any bonafide reasons for not performing his obligations under the law.
Now, nearly more than 9 months have elapsed; till date, the said Builder has neither issued any Letter of Allotment to me identifying a specific flat, nor has executed any Deed of Transfer and Assignment of flat.
The said Builder on the pretext of one reason or the other dilly-dallied the matter and always brushed-aside my repeated requests of execution of Title Documents in my favour without any bonafide reason for not performing his obligations under the law. I am asking a question to the Supreme Authorities of Law and Order that is it not a sophisticated terrorism?
Besides all the emails and SMS sent to him preserved by me as documentary evidences, I am also holding all the original receipts for the amounts lawfully paid for the designated purpose.
The official receipts are issued by the said Builder on the printed letter heads of his Company wherein it has been clearly mentioned that the amounts so paid are towards a flat booking in the proposed residential project “DEV PRESTIGE” situate at Veera Desai Road, Andheri (West), Mumbai 400 053.
Is it not blatant abuse of various sections of MOFA, 1963 for non-fulfillment of statutory obligations, The Indian Contract Act for non-performance of his promises within a reasonable time and The Indian Penal Code for alleged criminal breach of trust and cheating?
I am at a loss to read the ulterior intentions of the said Builder or is it an aimless but an attempt of deliberate harassment to me and my family members or a sophisticated terrorism. As my family members at home are now losing their patience; I seek an instant settlement of my long pending issue without any further delay to arrest mental torture caused by so-called ISO 9001-2000 Company.
It is now proved and confirmed beyond doubt about the malicious intentions and integrity of the said Builder that over a period of more than 9 months, he has succumbed to immoral and wicked ploy to dispossess me and my family of my lawful flat in building known as “DEV PRESTIGE” for his ulterior motives to unlawfully garner the surplus profit by selling my proposed flat in his said building due to sudden spurt in cost of flats in this area of Andheri, West.
The abhorrent fact now surfaces that why despite my repeated requests and reminders the said Builder did not reply even a single email sent by me to him and continued to defy and disregard the execution of the Title Documents.
All the emails sent to him are preserved by me besides holding all the receipts on their letter heads for the amounts lawfully paid for the designated purpose. I am a middle class family person and cannot afford the legal charges to approach the Court of Law. Hence, I request you to file FIR against the said Builder for breach of trust and cheating.
I am staying in rented premises with a disturbed monthly budget. The lack of accountability and ethics in the system of law and order against such white culprits, the fact remains that no amount of retribution can make up for the trauma and mental torture that I and my family members have gone through and further how long.
Sincerely yours,
Dilip Shah

This is to seek help and advice from you regarding a matter related to my parents, both sinor sitizens, living in Chandigarh.
My parents rented a set of 2 rooms and a kitchen to a family back in March,2009 for 11 months as per the agreement. After the completion of 11 months in Feb, 2010 when my parents asked the tenants to vacate the room set as they were not happy with the behaviour of the tenants as they disturbe my parents by causing noises till late night and misbehaving with my mother and father whenever they were asked to vacate the room set. My parents are not in good health and cannot bear such kind of harassment.
Now they have started harassing my parents by parking their car in front of main gate of house which is causing a lot of trouble to my parents.
My mother a patient of diabetes and high BP have to go to labarotary to get the blood sugar check up early in the morning and while the tenants car parked at front of main gate, it is very difficult for them(my parents) to get their own car out of house. My parents told initially to the tenants that they are not provided with any kind parking space during their stay in our house and they (tenants) agreed to it at the time of agreement.
I am living far away from my parents in Maharashtra state and I am not in position to visit my parents frequently. Please help my parents to get rid of these bad tenants.
I shall be very thankful to you.

Betab Singh

Prescription non-compliance is a highly dangerous problem affecting over 50% of all people taking medication. Complications arising from non-compliance account for 10% of all hospital admissions, increase in hospital stays by 4.2 days and 23% of all nursing home admissions.
PILL ONTIME primarily targets senior citizens, but people of all ages should benefit. People being treated for diabetes, Parkinson’s, cancer, transplants, heart failure, ADHD and many other ailments need to take their medication at precise times to maximize the effect of the medicine.
Most caregivers of ageing parents are themselves raising their own families and are busy with work and other commitments. With PILL ONTIME they can be sure that their loved ones take medications on time.
Important Usage Instructions
Generally the below types of medicines should not be used in medication reminder devices
Dispersible or effervescent medicines – those which dissolve in water or in your mouth
Medicines which are not tablets or capsules – such as suppositories, liquids and powders
Medicines which need special temperature storage – such as in the refrigerator
Medicines whose original container contains a drying agent or sachet – this indicates that the medicine will be unstable if exposed to moisture in the air
Medicines with cytotoxic potential – those which can be harmful if handled and may be cancer-causing

Dear [Decision Maker],
I am writing to ask that you please turn your immediate attention to bringing relief to the 8 million Senior citizens who did not receive their cost-of-living adjustment this year.
We are already months into 2010 and seniors are facing difficulties due to rising expenses and falling assets. While overall inflation might have been low last year, the daily costs for seniors continue to grow - especially on the things that seniors need most, such as health care and prescription drugs. The average senior spends out of pocket every year on health care alone.
I’m counting on you to address this problem now - and ensure that seniors get the relief they need at this critical time.
Thank you in advance for your support on this important issue. Please act quickly to help seniors afford health care, prescription drugs, food and other basic necessities.
Sincerely,
[Gautam Chowdhury PGDip.Geriatric care,ExNISDian.Delhi]

If your father is a poor man,
it is your fate but,
if your father-in-law is a poor man,
it’s your stupidity.
………………………………………………………………….
I was born intelligent -
education ruined me.
………………………………………………………………….
Practice makes perfect…..
But nobody’s perfect……
so why practice?
………………………………………………………………….
If it’s true that we are here to help others,
then what exactly are the others here for?
………………………………………………………………….
Since light travels faster than sound,
people appear bright until you hear them speak.
…………………………………………………………………
How come “abbreviated” is such a long word?
………………………………………………………………….
Money is not everything.
There’s Mastercard & Visa.
………………………………………………………………….
One should love animals.
They are so tasty.
………………………………………………………………….
Behind every successful man, there is a woman
And behind every unsuccessful man, there are two.
………………………………………………………………….
Every man should marry.
After all, happiness is not the only thing in
life.
………………………………………………………………….
The wise never marry.
and when they marry they become otherwise.
………………………………………………………………….
Success is a relative term.
It brings so many relatives.
………………………………………………………………….
Never put off the work till tomorrow
what you can put off today.
………………………………………………………………….
“Your future depends on your dreams”
So go to sleep
………………………………………………………………….
There should be a better way to start a day
Than waking up every morning
…………………………………………………………………
“Hard work never killed anybody”
But why take the risk
………………………………………………………………….
“Work fascinates me”
I can look at it for hours
………………………………………………………………….
God made relatives;
Thank God we can choose our friends.

The more you learn, the more you know,
The more you know, the more you forget
The more you forget, the less you know
So.. why learn.

The project - which is possibly the first in Asia - hopes to
accommodate 50 elderly gay men and women by the end of the year.
Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil of Rajpipla who made the world headlines
after coming out as gay in 2006 has set up India’s first old age home
for gay men and women.
Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2007. He is
the only male heir to the 650-year-old Rajpipla dynasty. The scion of
the Rajpipla royal family from Gujarat appeared as a guest on the
Oprah Winfrey Show in an episode in her “Gay around the world” episode
in 2007. He was disowned after coming out as gay in 2006 but has since
reconciled with his family, and is the only known person of royal
lineage in modern India to have publicly revealed he is gay.
The project is developed by the prince through the auspices of Lakshya
Trust, a community-based organisation he founded to provide support
and promote HIV/AIDS prevention among men who have sex with men
(MSMs). The organisation runs three centres where men can go to get
information and counseling services.
“The heterosexual world doesn’t understand our issues that well as yet
because of existing stigma and discrimination in our society,” the 44-
year-old prince said in a television interview.
The home is slated to open at the end of this year and will also house
HIV+ patients.

CHANDIGARH: Senior citizens in the city have a reason to smile. Following a recent announcement by UT
administration for implementation of
Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007 in the city,
there would be immediate hearing of legal disputes pertaining to their grievances. Though the tribunal was set up in January, there was no gazetted notification of rules.
The Act had come into effect in 2007 but it was not adopted by the UT. As Manjit Brar, director public relations, noted, “We have adopted this central government Act. This is to expedite complaints of these citizens. The SDMs of the areas (central, east and south) are the appellant authorities.”
In absence of these notified rules for tribunals till now, the procedure was too arduous and took a lot of time. As Amar Vivek, advocate, Punjab and Haryana High Court, said, “Under Section-125 of CrPC for a criminal case before the magistrate, a senior citizen finds it tough to contest. Such cases can be easily managed under a tribunal.”
Besides penalizing children who abandon their parents above 60 years of age, that could now invite imprisonment of up to three months or a fine of Rs 5,000, the judgment pronounced by the tribunal cannot be challenged by civil court. The notification reads that the jurisdiction of civil courts is barred from entertaining any matter pertaining to this act. “This also implies that in the long run, the burden on the civil courts would be lessened. However, the maximum compensation or maintenance allowance is Rs 10,000, which is not sufficient in a city like Chandigarh. For amounts higher than this, civil courts could be approached,” Vivek added.
The Act empowers senior citizens with the right to demand medical treatment, residence, food and clothing from their children. Elated with the recent notification, Teja Shergill, retired police official from Intelligence Bureau and a senior citizen, noted, “This would certainly speed up disposal of senior citizens’ grievances in the court. People who are deserted by their relatives and children can now legally settle the matter within no time.”

Most important problems faced by Old Adults:
Financial problem
Possibility of social Negligenc
Medical problems, health managementMobility problems
Lack of love and affection from near and dear
I believe these are the most important and generic problems faced by older adults which i concluded to after speaking to 6 - 7 older adults, following are 5 important ways which would help
- Financial aid from the government or NGO’s and corporate bodies
- To avoid social negligence schemes should be implemented wherein special edifice are created in every city or town and the old people of that area can come and spend their time leisurely chatting and talking to people of their own age, and going back home every day. It should teach the old different exercises, motivational lectures, religious lectures or the art of Yoga, like a young is taught different subjects related to academics in school. This school should also work as a evocative place where the youth can contribute their time and finances to the old, learning from them and helping them.
- Medical problems, health management: should be improved for every old as free education and good health is the right of every human. There are many ways this can be improved using the latest technology. Like creating the database of every senior citizen’s illness, and the regular doctor’s they refer to thus in case of emergency the regular doctor can easily be contacted. Regular and free medical checkups are also a way to constantly monitor the health of seniors
- Mobility problems, there should be vehicles designed specially for the old, like the ol’boy a car designed for the old by a design student from IIT. Such innovations and minds should be rewarded so that the the general public becomes aware of such things for the old and possibly the car manufacturing corporate houses
- Lack of love and affection from near and dear ones: This is a problem which I felt is the most common and root cause of all the other problems faced by the senior citizens. As and when children grow up and start earning they stop spending time with their grandparents, possibly forgetting the simple phone calls or even throwing their old fathers’ or grandfathers’ out of the house. This is a problem whose roots lie alongwith money. Money is the root cause of all this, there have been cases where children have robbed there parents of the money or property and thrown their parents out of the house, since they are weak and old they are seldom able to react.
Government has a policy of reverse mortgage of house, but since every senior does not own a lavish house, one should also come up with the policy of respecting the old and giving back to the parents what they as children have reaped from them. This policy is more at an emotional level than a policy that can be implemented. The general people should be made aware of this situation through advertisements print or electronic.

First of all it may be because they are physical not so strong. Secondly, may be the,are jobless or retired. Thirdly, may be their next generation thinks
them(Older Adults) to be burden as they cannot make any require effort
toward their famiy. Forthly, they might have a financial crisis. Last
but nt the least, they thinks that these harmless beings(Old ADults)
are trouble then help.
…..well as i feel they need to be understand a
bit…..and cannot be compiled in just simple sentences…..they need
love,affection,undestanding…..n need to make them happy in the way
they are n they want….they are not burdens rather they are the
blessings. And the young generation should be concern with it

The most five important difficulties/concerns of older adults as per my view and experience are
1. Financial problem
2. Health problems
3. Insecure feelings
4. Mentaly week
5. Not ready to adjust to the situation
1 financial problem is one of the major concerns of the older adults it can be solved by getting them in groups and teaching them how they can make different things if they are interested in doing it, like some people like to paint, but was not able to do it due their daily schedule when they where working ,we can encourage them to draw/ paint and show them how it can generate money for their needs and how they can be independent
2.health problems is another concern of the older adults which can be solved by organizing health checkup camps for them and educating the society of health insurance,
Because most of the older adults hide their illness due to lack of money. now there are many health insurance plans which allow people to get benefits while they get older .
We can even make the older persons aware of different kinds of illness which may come to them ,and how to avoid it.
3. most of the adults feel insecure about the world around them hating them. This is mostly physic it has to be overcome and can only be done by counseling
4. they become very much mentally week as their age grows and hence it makes them to think negatively which causes problem, as it is said an idle mind is devils workshop ,so they are to be made mentally active
5.they are to be made mentally very strong to adjust to the situation

Jorawer Singh, Chandigarh, October 1, 2009: On the International day for the Elderly or the Senior Citizens’ Day as we call it, the Older Adults of the tricity gets a much awaited 24 X 7 helpline. The helpline number is 9888 9888 47. The helpline, to be monitored by a local NGO DadaDadi.org, will provide information and assistance related to varied needs of the senior citizens, from sending electricians, plumbers to legal aid and support in fighting for their cause.
“The response has been tremendous, with people calling for congratulating and also for sheer testing, besides telling their hordes of problem, affirms our belief that senior citizens really needed a support on this front” said Sukhbir Kaur, president of the NGO. As per the last census, Chandigarh alone will have about 68 thousand senior citizens with an equal number from adjoining Punchkula and Mohali who will benefit from this service.
As per official records, the Tricity has around 68,000 senior residents who will now be able to seek help at their doorstep. The NGO is also working on a tie-up with ambulance services to provide immediate assistance to the elderly, whenever needed which is expected to be operational by November end this year.

14th September 09 : Schools can go a long way in inculcating love for Grandparent. one such nice example is Shemrock students who celebrated ‘Grandparents Day’ at School premises in sector – 69, Mohali. The tiny toddlers celebrated this day with traditional fervour and excitement. The student has invited their grandparents with beautiful hand made cards. They honored them with garland tilak and asked for blessings by touching their feet’s. The grandparents, who were deeply touched with this gesture in turn, embraced the little ones with warmly.
The principal, Air Cmde S.K. Sharma said that blind aping of the west and the influence of western culture and pursuit of accadmics had made the children of today move away from traditional valves. Observance of day like ‘Grandparents Day’ helps to revive our deep-rooted culture and moral values. It helps in bringing the younger and senior generations together on a common platform.
The children put up a beautiful show singing Songs ‘dadi amma dadi amma man jayo’ ‘Grand maa Grand paa I love you’. The senior generation was deeply moved by this expression of love and simplicity and found it hard to fight back their tears. The children danced and sang great joy and enthusiasm, thus enthralling the audience, who showered blessing upon their little ones. The grandparents felt that the celebration had bought back fond memories of their childhood. They thoroughly enjoyed enlightening the children on certain issues and were happy to answer their various queries.

As Senior Citizens are prone to falls and most likely place of incident has been noticed as the toilets and washrooms. Also the most likely cause has been the wet floors. It is always advisable to use non slip mats in areas prone to having wet floor.
DadaDadi urges all to come forward like Mr SS Gill, a resident of Sector 35 Chandigarh, 9888 55 1945, for having a foresight and concern regarding his 90 year old parents. He is in process of installing such anti skid mats at his residence.
The non-slip mats/flooring is available at DC Associates, SCO 124-125 First Floor Sector 34 A in Chandigarh. “The cost is about 35/- per square foot and the material is available in different hues, patterns and colors” said Mrs Ravinder, a company official, while answering calls on the company numbers 0172 - 2610498, 2668293
Let us all continue to work out improving the lives of older adults.

Shimona Kanwar, TNN 11 September 2009,
CHANDIGARH: Following in the footsteps of the Himachal Pradesh government, announcing 30% discount on stay to families having daughters, the
city is also mulling concessions for its largest chunk of residents - senior citizens.
With the business industry fast emerging as a tool to strengthen family ties with great offers and incentives, the definition of eating out is all set to undergo a major change. Well, if the executive body of the Hotel and Restaurants Association of Chandigarh gives a go ahead, one may soon find a billboard hanging outside one of the finest eating joints reading - Come along with your grandparents and avail 15-20% off on select hotels and restaurants. With special focus on social corporate responsibility rather than mere profits, hotels and restaurants are working hard to fortify family bonds.
A senior citizen-dedicated NGO, DadaDadi, has proposed to the hotel association in the city to give concession of 15-20% to clients accompanied with their grandparents or senior citizens. Zorawer Singh, executive operations, DadaDadi, said, “The idea is to encourage families to bring along their grandparents as they normally prefer to leave them back home.”
He said, “A feeling of being cornered sets in at this age. To help grandparents and elderly regain their lost sense of esteem, we approached the hotel association which assured us of all possible help.” Stating that the hotel industry was considering the idea, Manmohan Singh Kohli, president, hotel and restaurant association said, “We will take up the issue with our executive body. It is first of its kind proposal offered to us.”
It might be recalled that a few days ago, the Himachal government had initiated a move to offer discount to families with girls. “We observed that the model was successful and attracted many clients. If this could be feasible in that state, it will easily work in the city,” added Zorawer. Elated on the proposal, Gurvinder Singh, an octogenarian residing in sector 35 said, “If the offer is accepted, it will instill a sense of respect among elderly. The flip side is that some might use senior citizens as a discount card but the officials should ensure this does not happen.”

CHANDIGARH: There is cheer for senior citizens and disabled in Chandigarh who are fond of reading books and
magazines. UT administration has
decided to take the library to the doorsteps of senior citizens who are fond of
reading but cannot visit libraries owing to the age factor or physical deformity. All that they will have to do for availing the facility is to ring up a number and convey what all they want to read. The scheme is being launched on September 8, World Literacy Day.
Conceived under the community outreach programme, the education department, in collaboration with state NSS cell and central state library, has arranged to execute the scheme and deliver books and magazines at houses of senior citizens and disabled with the help of NSS volunteers.
Director higher education Ajoy Sharma, the brain behind the scheme, said, “Such persons require assistance and we are doing our best to reach out to them, for ensuring that they do not feel handicapped and their reading habit is sustained. If the aged and disabled cannot come to the library, let the library go to them,” he quipped.
The modalities of implementation of the scheme have already been worked out. For convenience sake, Chandigarh has been divided into five zones- north, east, west, south and central. Every zone will have two coordinators and 12 NSS volunteers. All that the senior citizens and disabled have got to do is to ring up 2701269 and tell the person at the other end what books or magazines they want to read.
The librarians will approach the coordinator in their respective areas who will further assign the work to NSS volunteers. The delivery will be made thrice in a week- on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, over 15 days. The volunteers will deliver and collect the books or magazines from their houses.
State librarian Suraj P Nagpal said Chandigarh had central state library, Sector-17, state library, Sector-34, three branch libraries at Manimajra, one in village Badheri and a reading room at Burail. Besides, the city has a mobile library. The total number of members of these libraries is about 45,000. Out of these, about 200 to 300 members are not able to visit the libraries due to one reason or another.
Bikram Rana, state liaison officer, NSS cell, UT, said the move would indeed be a service to senior citizens and disabled. Involvement of NSS volunteers, numbering more than 12,000 in Chandigarh, would definitely inculcate the feeling of community service in them, he added.
Volunteers would also be assigned the duty of enrolling new members in their respective areas. All formalities will be completed at their houses. The forms, complete in all respects, will be handed over to the state librarian, who will make the enrolments and issue identity cards, Rana said.

It is shameful for us to see a senior citizen, out on his evening walk, loosing his life after falling in a hole dug by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi
(MCD) in Malviya Nagar on August 28, 2009.
Police said some passerby spotted Trilok Nath Makhan’s (78) body on Saturday morning. He was a resident of B-Block Shivalik Park and was staying with his wife.

THIS IS an idea, presented originally by Mr subhash sharma, subhash.sharma170@gmail.com, using IP 122.173.168.33. The idea is to utilise the services of senior citizens who are willing to offer their services and rich experiences, through a data bank explored for this purpose.
In the present day scenario, average age has been increased globally. There is a boost in health consciousness. Retirement age in government and other offices is between 58 and 62 years. People are active after retirement and have skill in different fields. If they are engaged in any productive activity they may be proved helpful and asset for the establishments of the respective area. No doubt young ones have to take new assignments and these oldies will not jeopardise their interests. Purpose of such type of banks is to explore the resources of old generation at lower cost and coordinate establishments and available old workforce/think tank. Many organisations may feel the need of such talents and similarly many matured thinkers may be willing to engage themselves in some establishment. But due to lack of any coordinating agency or feeling of reluctance from both sides (engager and to be engaged) makes gap in achieving the goal.
This service extended through Cooperative Society base may fetch very good results keeping in view the highly experienced and talented manpower at lower cost. It will require network of centers for liaison and collection of data of establishments/corporate/organisations as well as of talented and matured work force. Once it is established it will be helpful to corporate/establishments, individual oldies and society. If these old gold are engaged for the good cause it will improve the economic, mental and social position of the individual and family at large. Many family problems and depression related problems may be solved and ultimately nation will develop a strong base.
Such banks, before catering the needs of the aspirants, will explore the data:
1. From the applicants and store the same mainly on the following lines:
Personal details, age, family obligations, economic condition, basic qualifications, professional skills, field of specialisation, identity proof, passport number, driving license, voter ID, two references-including one of previous employer, postal address, telephone numbers, email id, present status of income generation, major and minor health ailments, surgeries undergone for specified diseases, medical check- up reports (covering diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, eyes, ears and disability checks up etc), handwritten note regarding reasons to take post-retirement assignment and up-to how much period feels fit to discharge assigned job, last CTC, present employment-CTC and notice period required-if any, expected CTC, average daily engagement time, preference of number of working days in a week and photos etc.
(2) From organisations/establishments requiring matured talents:
Name of the establishment, address, telephone numbers, website and email ID, structure/hierarchy, nature of business, number of employees working, name and designation of effective contact person, yearly turn-over, P/L account, general or specific details of requirement for matured talent, expected CTC offer, service conditions, specific time limit for procurement, period of engagement etc.
This bank will not perform like placement agencies but the setup will be of NGO (no profit-no loss) on national level having its head/controlling office at one place say Delhi/NCR and network of branches throughout India. It may also work globally in due course of time.
Formation of Cooperative Society’s rules and regulations, bye-laws, its registration, executive body, registered office, funds and manpower are basic requirements.

Jorawer Singh, Bathinda, September 1, 2009: It is not a miracle but sheer grit, passion and dedication to profession that these Doctors, after retiring from their cosy Government jobs, working at a construction site of HMEL, 40 Km away from the Bhathinda main city, are handling difficult and critical medical emergencies.
Local NGO DadaDadi.org was instrumental in having these senior citizens deployed at this site as part of its mission to have older adults gainfully and respectfully employed.
“It is all the with the grace of god and the support provided by the Hindustan Mittal Energy Limited that we are able to save the precious human li ves at this remote location” said Dr Prem Verma. Narrating an incident which happened early this month he said “Sona Haldar, 31, a job aspirant was standing in the queue for pre-employment medical examination, suddenly he fall on the ground and got unconscious, I was on duty and found that BP & Pulse was unrecordable, heartbeat was also not coming. I immediately started doing cardiac massage and also gave him mouth to mouth respiration and oxygen, after 2 minutes, his heartbeat started , then he was given emergency medicines; Injection Effcorlin, Injection Decadrom and IV Fluid within few minutes pulse become appeared and BP also recordable.” “By evening this daily-wager’s pulse was 70/ per minute and BP 102 / 68. After stabilizing, the patient he was referred to Charitable Hospital at Raman Mandi.” added Dr Prem with elation.
Another Senior citizen, Dr Sadhu Singh, is equally happy after saving a life this weak. A labourer working at site, Krishan Ram, 35, was brought to Occupational Health Centre with the history of severe diarrheoa & vomiting. Dr. Sadhu Singh along with Paramedical staff examined the patient; BP & Pulse was unrecordable, heartbeat was just feeble. Dr. Sadhu, immediately started the treatment “IV Fluid started instantly and emergency medicines were given to him”. After 15 minutes of intensive procedure, pulse & BP become recordable. After stabilizing the patient for half an hour, referred to Charitable Hospital at Raman.
The Corporate responsibility just does not end with this, “Our Occupational Health team was continuously in touch with Doctors at Charitable hospital. On 10.08.2009, he was discharged from the Hospital.”said relieved Mr Ravi Yadav, HR Head at Bathinda Refinery.

Difficulties of Senior Citizen
1) They are depressed because of their children’s behaviour.
2) They do not take care of themselves like no medicine on time if they are ill and no walking and all for their better health.
3) Speech difficulties.
4) If the older adult is too talkative and no one hears his/her problem is another difficulty.
5) No excitement and enjoyment in life.
Meaningful and valueable solutions
Talking with them is the best way. Celebrate occasions with them like their birthdays, anniversaries, festivals etc. We can give them work like which is suitable for them to do and giving them money so that they can go out and shop for whatever they want and make a team and play sports , also do activities which can bring smiles on their faces.

ISSUES OF OLDER PEOPLE
1. When they do not get proper attention, for eg -after the death of partner feeling lonely all the time and having no one to talk to and so complaining all the time which irriates everyone around
2.Having fixed routines of eating, watching the same TV shows, which appear boring to everyone else.
3. When no one, specially the grand children, listen to them,do no pay regard and respect to their orthodox views, and hence no one wants their suggestion and participation
4. Monetory problems in case of a widow ,who lives on her husbands pension and had been abandoned by children
5.The short term memory, which most of the times irritates the younger ones for eg”where are my glasses, please help me find them”,where is my purse,i need it.
SOLUTION FOR THE ISSUES
Providing them attention and being patient and it is not possible to be with them all the time, but their basic requirements should atleast not be ignored. There are all sorts of peolpe in a family ,but its the parents duty to imbibe in their children,to pay respect to their granparents,no matter what.I dont think its the child’s fault to be disrespecting dadi or dada, but he/she should be stopped the very first time they attemt such a thing.
and in times of festivals they be given the same place in family duties which they have had and they should have, thier being old does retire them from a government job,but not from doing family chores and make it a point to take them to exhibitions ,mandir and to parks or to the doctor for a routine BP checkup.

DIFFICULTIES OF THE SENIOR CITIZEN’S
1. Health Problem - Older citizens suffer a lot due to diseases which become more prominent to their weak bodies.
2. Monetary Problem - If they have not saved money for their future and are away from their children, they are liable to this.
3. Care Problem - In the modern days when most children opt for service in bigger cities their parents are left alone.
4. Loneiness - There are little associations for older citizens and they lack company of people of their age group.
5. Physical & Mental tension - There is a lot of tension to older adults which keeps on increasing with age.
WAYS TO RESOLVE THE CONCERNS
Special association for older citizens so that proper health care can be taken. Moreover, their loneliness can be removed as they can get many friends in the organization of their age group. They should be made to feel more relieved and enjoy life to the fullest. The group of all citizens laugh together daily in morning and evening and people save money for their future during their adulthood the Special facilities are made to be available for the older citizens in the hospital. There are someone who take care of older citizens and hear and respond to their beliefs and feelings.

I appreciate you for being involving yourself in such a noble work. May God bless you. Refer telecon at 6 p.m today on the subject. I know of an elderly person aged 80 years who is in distress due loneliness and lack peer company. His only son is in Air Force.Having nobody to take care of his parents at native place, he is keeping his parents with him. Father is unable to adjust in the cantonment environment. Over and above, he is transferred to a field location (hard area) where stay for the elderly could be harsh and difficult. An accommodation in your old age home could prove a help for the elderly and a relief to the soldier.
thanking you,
kindly reply soon.

The most concerned thing is ignorance which older adults face. Secondly, they dont get all kind of facilities which they need. Thirdly, they loosen their command over the young ones. Fourthly, they dont get importance in their family matters.
Finally, they feel lonely and no one is their for them to share their feelings.
The ways how we can make lives of Older Adults more meanigful & lively:
Firstly, they should be given full respect. Secondly, they should not feel that they are all alone. Thirdly, they should be provided with all the facilities i.e. healthy diet, proper medication. Fourthly, they should be given the priority to be the head of family. Last but not the least, they should be taken for time outs with family to memorise their early days.
Surely, I will be associated with you for this Nobel cause as any part of you or representative in my city.

A rally was held here yesterday to impress upon young nationals the need to take care of their ageing parents and grandparents.
An association dedicated to the elderly organized a rally from the roundabout near the General Post Office (GPO) to Al Bida Park. It was taken out in cooperation with the Social Affairs Department at the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.
A large number of people, including students and representatives from different social institutions, took part. Also present were senior officials from the Department of Social Affairs.
A highlight was the presence of the chairman of the Central Municipal Council (CMC), Nasser Abdullah Al Kaabi, and several of his colleagues. At the culmination of the march, Al Kaabi and senior officials from the association dedicated to the care of the elderly addressed the participants.
Al Kaabi said that although government had set up several homes for care of the elderly, it was the duty of the younger generation to take care of their ageing parents and grandparents.
“Our religion and traditions teach us to take care of our ageing parents and grandparents,” he said, obliquely hinting that a trend was catching on in the Qatari community where materialism was dominating social and family values.
Nuclear families are increasing in number and joint families where the elderly enjoyed huge support, are disintegrating. Women are venturing out to work and walking shoulder to shoulder with men. This is a welcome development.
Social and family values as well as compulsions are changing and this is leading some families to ignore their ageing members. This is one of the negative fallouts of the changing system.
“We don’t want to send our ageing parents and grandparents to the homes for care of the elderly. Let’s pledge today that we will take care of them ourselves, and we will take good care,” said Al Kaabi in an emotionally-charged speech.
“We want to discourage the trend of deserting ageing relatives and encourage the culture of love and care for them,” he said.
The secretary of the association for the elderly, Yusuf Al Muftah, also spoke on the occasion. He hoped that the message of the rally that “we must take good care of our ageing parents and grandparents had reached the younger members of our society”.
“We must not forget the role of our elderly who made huge sacrifices to raise us and make us successful individuals and responsible citizens and to build our society,” he said.
Al Muftah said that one should not forget that one day one would also get older and then one would realize the importance of family care.
Also present was the president of the association for the elderly.
A highlight of the rally was the presence of the army musical band which played melodious tunes all through.
